Don't talk to me about AI: I will shit myself
LPT: tired of every conversation devolving into whether AI bad or AI good? Want to get out of the inevitable conversation about the inevitability of AI? Pop a laxative (I recommend chocolate) or self-insert a cheap CVS enema: no one will talk to you if you're blowing ass all over the kitchen floor.
In all seriousness, it's not just tech where I have these conversations. Sister #2 was hosting a playdate and as I was chatting with the other parents, the topic went to everyone's day jobs (you know how it invariably goes with adult small talk). There's no winning.
If I say I'm a SWE, it's: "Oh, wow, how is AI changing your job right now? Do you even code anymore? Or is AI taking your job, har har? Wait, are you worried AI will take your job?"
If I say I'm in grad school, it's: "Oh, wow, how is AI changing writing/teaching right now? Do you even write anymore? Or is AI writing for you, har har? Wait, are you worried about AI being a better writer than you?"
Doesn't matter if the person asking is in tech or law or the arts or hospitality or the government. It always spirals the same way. I'd rather watch soybeans grow at this point.
I have no opinion about AI. Or, more like, I do have an opinion, but I've said it so much that it almost ceases to hold any deeper meaning for me. At this point, I am apathetic. So: don't talk to me about AI. I will politely excuse myself to the bathroom.
